Burials

In the nine hundred years since St Marylebone Parish Church was established, its parishioners have been buried in several various places. The first burial grounds, which surrounded the first parish church of St John the Evangelist, built c.1116, have long disappeared. However, other sites, including the Crypt of the 19th century parish church, and the churchyard of the 15th - 19th century parish church, still remain.

Over the years, grave sites of parishioners have been moved; for example, during the 1980s, when the Crypt was cleared to transform the space into the NHS GP Surgery and the HCC Psychotherapy Centre, the bodies interred in the Crypt were moved to Brookwood Cemetary.

Paddington Street Gardens

While today the two small public gardens of Paddington Street Gardens, located on either side of Paddington Street in Marylebone, are open green spaces with children’s playgrounds and benches providing respite from the busyness of nearby Baker Street and Marylebone Road, these gardens were, in fact, built in the 18th century as additional burial grounds for St Marylebone Parish Church.
